A RADICAL NEW MOON: We are advised to "expect the unexpected" this coming week, especially as we work with the New Moon energies starting on Friday and carrying through the weekend. When the Sun and Moon align to begin the new lunar cycle at 11:06 p.m. PDT on August 22, they will be at 00°23' Virgo—tightly square radical, surprising Uranus (01°22' Gemini) and also square transformational Sedna (01°50' Gemini).
Although Virgo is known for its practicality, efficiency, and ability to organize, the square to rebellious Uranus is likely to toss all plans out the window. Instead, we can anticipate disruptions to order, and sudden or surprising events that require us to be flexible and to let go of Virgo's need to be in control. Adding to Uranus' impact, the sideways-spinning planet is especially strong right now, as it’s moving very slowly in preparation for stationing retrograde on September 7.
Given that Uranus is a transpersonal planet and the representative of Higher Mind, we will want to be open to the new ideas that potentially will be available at this New Moon. Symbolically, electrical Uranus will be rewiring our brains so that we see beyond our old perceptions and judgments of what is feasible. Solutions to any challenges that arise are likely to be very different than what we might have considered reasonable in the past.
URANUS-SEDNA CONJUNCTION: This week's New Moon will activate the joint forces of Uranus and Sedna; while the conjunction between these two planets will not be exact until next May, it is within half a degree of perfection now and through most of September.
The alignment of Uranus and Sedna initiates major social change. It manifests through the breakdown of systems that have been built on lies and the abuse of power. As it also exposes the true history of humanity, it offers new perspectives on reality and an awakening of each person's knowing of their higher destiny.
AND MORE: Other planets will be adding to the unsettledness and change associated with Friday's New Moon. With Jupiter in Cancer semisquare the lunation, emotions are heightened and we will need to watch a tendency to react in a defensive way. We might need to adjust how we usually deal with challenges with Saturn and Neptune in Aries quincunx the Sun and Moon. We must combine both practical and spiritual solutions in our responses, being less successful if we focus solely on taking charge and being authoritative (Saturn) or choose only the path of meditation and visualization (Neptune). And, with Pluto in Aquarius also quincunx the New Moon, social change and public reactions are woven into the tapestry.
In contrast to these multiple challenging aspects, we will have the assist of Chiron and Eris during the lunation, as both are in harmonious trine aspect to the New Moon. These trines represent opportunities for healing and personal empowerment. The positive outcomes are supported when we first acknowledge the unresolved fears and wounds that may have been undermining our confidence and the ability to assert ourselves in healthy ways.
ALSO: This Friday's New Moon opens the lunar cycle that will reach its climax at the Total Lunar Eclipse on September 7 (the same day that Uranus stations retrograde). Astrologers have differing opinions about when "eclipse season" begins; I usually sense eclipse energies starting to build right after the lunation that precedes the first eclipse. So yes, that means that we will be working with those life-changing energies as soon as this next weekend ...
URANUS IN GEMINI SNIPPET: While we acclimate to the Uranus-in-Gemini energies, we may be experiencing a higher level of nervous energy and find it harder to concentrate. On the plus side, spontaneous insights, creative ideas, and a greater awareness of signs and synchronicities are also possible as our brains are slowly being rewired. (Uranus entered Gemini on July 7.)
DAILY ASPECTS THIS WEEK (August 18 - 24, 2025):
Here are my brief interpretations of this week's most important aspects, day by day:
Monday
Sun trine Eris: We are able to take risks and to assert ourselves, and may be inspired to take action to support a cause.
Tuesday
Sun trine Chiron: Self-confidence builds as we take time to support ourselves through enlightened self-care.
Wednesday
No major aspects are exact today.
Thursday
Venus square Eris: Relationship issues may arise if someone's rights as an individual are being discounted or if they are feeling smothered by loved one's protectiveness.
Friday
Sun enters Virgo: The Sun will be in the sixth sign from August 22 to September 22 this year. Virgo is by nature detail-oriented and practical—and yet, as we know, the New Moon that occurs today is more chaotic than organized, and the Pisces Total Lunar Eclipse in two weeks will also disrupt the status quo. Thus, our focus for the month of Virgo will likely be on discerning that which is within our capacity to control on a physical level, and what we must surrender to our higher self.
New Moon: The new lunar cycle begins late tonight, at 11:06 p.m. PDT, when the Sun and Moon align at 00°23' Virgo.
Saturday
Sun quincunx Saturn: We may be navigating some fatalistic or critical attitudes today.
Uranus semisquare Ceres, Jupiter square Ceres, Jupiter semisquare Uranus: Disruptions in the home environment or in one's home country, or differences of opinion within families could arise now. We may also be aware of a tendency to overeat, perhaps in an effort to feel safe.
Sunday
Sun square Uranus, Sun semisquare Jupiter, Sun quincunx Neptune, Sun square Sedna, Sun quincunx Pluto: The changes, uncertainties, and challenges associated with Friday's New Moon come into stronger focus today.
Mercury sesquiquadrate Saturn: We may struggle with a pessimistic mindset today, or be narrowminded or dismissive of others' ideas.

If Your Birthday Is This Week (August 18 - 24):
This year, you are in the process of reinventing yourself and learning to understand yourself at an even deeper level than before. Changes and surprises that occur serve to help you discover who you really are and what you truly want. You may go through periods of feeling very unsettled; do your best to cultivate an attitude of anticipation about the positive potentials of the changes that are occurring. Give yourself permission to experiment with a variety of options before committing to a specific course of action. (Solar Return Sun square Uranus, trine Chiron, square Sedna, trine Eris)
