Throughout human history, cultures around the world held sacred practices to help individuals transition from adolescence into true adulthood—not just in age, but in soul maturity. These rituals of initiation guided people to discover their deeper purpose and step into authentic leadership. Yet over thousands of years, these practices were suppressed, forgotten, or lost entirely. Today, as we face planetary crises that demand mature wisdom and authentic partnership with all life, we desperately need to remember—and reinvent—the journey that transforms us from ego-centered existence to soul-centered living.

Bill Plotkin explains that the loss of soul initiation practices has roots in cultural changes that began six to ten thousand years ago, when agriculture enabled hoarding and domination. As societies came under the control of egocentric leaders, "the practices and ceremonies for soul initiation were suppressed, outlawed, or brutally extinguished" because children and psychological adolescents are "much easier to control and dominate than Wanderers, Adults, and Elders." Now, as consumer-conformist culture threatens most species with extinction, we need true Adults and Elders—and the cultural practices that support soul maturation—more than ever.
