This week's Socially-Conscious and Unconscious News

Greetings, friends. Each week, I scan the noise and nonsense to bring you stories that matter — the ones that shape our world, our choices, and our future. — Robert Jennings, InnerSelf.com
Let’s get right to it:
‘Good Trouble Lives On’—U.S. Civil Rights Revival
Wikipedia (summary of media)
"John Lewis is smiling—‘good trouble’ is still in style."
On July 17, tens of thousands across roughly 300 U.S. cities are set to rally in “Good Trouble Lives On” protests, inspired by civil rights icon John Lewis. Organized by groups like Black Voters Matter and the NAACP, the marches are calling attention to voting rights, democracy, and social justice. This matters because grassroots mobilization on civil rights is resurging, refusing to go quietly in a time of democratic stress.

Inside Florida’s “Alligator Alcatraz” Detention Center
The New York Times
"When your immigration plan sounds like a horror movie title, maybe it's time to recheck the script."
An investigation into Florida’s new migrant detention center, nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz,” reveals dangerous and chaotic conditions inside the Everglades compound. Built hastily on federal land without proper oversight, the center has been plagued by extreme heat, inadequate sanitation, and fears of disease and alligator encounters. Guards are undertrained, detainees lack access to legal help, and immigrant rights advocates describe it as a humanitarian disaster in the making. This matters because it reflects how cruelty and spectacle are increasingly baked into immigration policy—not by accident, but by design.

Trump Floats Firing Fed Chair Powell
Reuters
"Threatening to fire the Fed Chair is cheap political theater—until markets crash, then it’s a high-stakes spectacle."
On July 16, a source told Reuters that former President Trump is considering terminating Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and even showed a draft dismissal letter to Republican lawmakers, who apparently responded positively en.wikipedia.org+14reuters.com+14sg.finance.yahoo.com+14. The news roiled financial markets, triggering flashes of volatility, before Trump later denied any imminent plan to fire Powell. The move is a direct challenge to the Fed's independence and could undermine both domestic and global financial stability.

Republicans Blast Canada Over Wildfire Smoke After Backing Cause
The Guardian
"Claiming their summer is spoiled while voting for the heat? That’s some top-tier climate hypocrisy."
On July 7, six Republican members of the U.S. House from Wisconsin and Minnesota sent a letter to Canada’s ambassador complaining that smoke from Canadian wildfires is “suffocating” their constituents and ruining outdoor summer plans. Yet just days earlier they supported a massive spending bill broadening fossil fuel support and slashing renewable energy incentives—actions expected to add 7 billion tonnes of emissions over five years. Experts point out that climate change is fueling increasingly severe wildfires, especially in Canada’s boreal forests, and that blaming cross-border smoke ignores the bigger problem. This episode matters because it highlights the irony of criticizing the symptoms of climate change while doubling down on the policies that worsen it.

Trump Rebukes Supporters Over Epstein Conspiracy Theories
Associated Press
"Slapping your own team for believing your conspiracies? "
On July 16, Trump publicly denounced some of his longtime supporters who continue to accuse the Justice Department of covering up a “client list” in the Jeffrey Epstein case, calling them “weaklings” and accusing them of adopting Democratic tactics

The Return To The Land Of Oz
Author: Robert Jennings, InnerSelf.com
Dorothy Gale III never quite believed the stories. Not fully. Not the way her grandmother told them. But she loved to listen. As a little girl, she’d curl up beside the old woman on a wide front porch in Kansas, the air thick with cicadas and the scent of cornfields. And the…
